What 'Extreme Couponing' Is Really About: Jerks and Organized Hoarders

If something about TLC's new reality series 'Extreme Couponing' makes you uneasy and fascinated at the same time, join the club.
As I watched last week's premiere -- as well as the special that aired a few months ago -- the feelings that I got weren't "Yay, bargain hunters!" or "Wow, if you really put your mind to it, you can live pretty well in this crummy economy!" No, it was just that turbulent combination of emotions that makes you ashamed you're watching this spectacle unfold on your flat screen but unable to turn the channel.
That's when I realized that 'Extreme Couponing' really isn't about frugal Americans at all. In fact, the feeling I got when watching the show was pretty similar to the feeling I get when I come across two other shows on the cable dial: A&E's 'Hoarders' and TLC's 'Hoarding: Buried Alive.'
