Recession based movies must have a name. I tried searching for about 5 minutes on Google and I did not find a term that I particularly cared for. Lets call it Recessioncore? Its memorable right? Well regardless of labels, Bridesmaids is ‘effing’ hilarious. Even guffaw-inducing. The movie is based on Kristen Wiig's character "Annie" and her attempt to be her best friend's maid of honor while struggling to cope with her financial and personal problems. Annie is in debt, lonely and is only able to keep a job through a favor from her mother.
Kristen Wiig carries most of the comedic weight of this film but the side characters do attempt to steal some of the spotlight. One particular scene stealer, Jon Hamm, is the gem of this movie. He is Annie's booty call in the movie and plays the handsome jerk to perfection. You welcome his presence every time he comes on-screen. Although Wiig gets the most laughs in the film, her character becomes too self involved and selfish for one to really care about her development. I eventually stopped caring about Annie because of her consistent 'woe-is-me' attitude and eventually rooted for her rival: Helen (Rose Byrne).
The movie's topical themes (RE: Recessioncore) and scenes of crude humor makes it appealing to men and women and even of all classes. Although its not as witty as last year stand out "Easy A," it is less sappy and with a better cast. If you are thinking of going out to see a movie this weekend, this is so far the best comedy of the year. “Bridesmaids” is also a test to see if your date has a sense of humor. It’s a good 3rd date kind of movie.
