If you’ve seen Watchmen and 300 then you’ll know what to expect in Sucker Punch. This movie, also directed by Zach Snyder, had the same aesthetic appeal; the mood and colors of the fight scenes are engraved with his signature leading to this truly beautiful film, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
The women in this film are also beautiful. Aside from the main girls- Baby Doll (Emily Browning), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jenna Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), and Amber (Jamie Chung)- you’ve got their maternal protector, [Madam] Dr. Gorski (Carla Gugino). We cannot forget the "Wise Man" who appears before their fight sequences to give instructions, a cliché along the lines of "If you Teach a man to fish" and "There’s no I in Team" and then adds a "One More Thing"- which usually ends up being really important. – Also, that guy in the beginning that you think really looks a lot like Jon Hamm… it is Jon Hamm.
The truth is, the trailer doesn’t do this film justice. In fact, the trailer throws you off the scent of the story- we know there’s a girl who’s been through some tough stuff, and she’s been locked away where she meets other girls that are locked away after being through some tough stuff. All together they plan their escape. Sounds simple, but there’s so much more.
Sucker Punch creates a fantasy world within the minds of these girls, who may actually be in a fantasy world to begin with. Layer upon layer is added as we weave our way through the story.
