First off, I do enjoy this show. I dig a couple of the stars and I like the whole 90210 nostalgia bit.
But even aside from being a remake/continuation of the original series, I can't help but think that this show has ripped off another (practically unheard of) show almost entirely, South of Nowhere.
South of Nowhere is a show on Noggin about a family from the midwest moving to LA for one of the parents' jobs. Included in the family are the attractive and ever-lovable mid-western-down-to-earth daughter, and the adopted over-achieving black son.
Even farther beyond these basic similiarities, the daughter makes nice with the attractive/bitchy misfit girl, the oh-so-popular cheerleading girl (the misfit and the cheerleader being ex-best friends and now arch-nemeses) and popular girls hunky boyfriend (who just happens to have a thing for cute mid-western girl, and vice versa).
I will not be at all surprised if Annie finds out Silver is a lesbian, and then starts to question her own sexuality (with a little experimentation as well.)
I don't know, I'm not even complaining. Like I said, I like both shows. I just thought the similarities were overwhelming. I'm sure there will be plenty of people to say that all of my points are rather generic, but that's not even an argument against what I'm saying. In fact, it rather upholds my "entirely unoriginal" summation.
Food for thought. If nothing else, I can only suggest South of Nowhere as another great show for those of you looking for similar entertainment.
