‘Food Network Star,’ Season 7, Episode 5, ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and 4th of July’: TV Recap

"Food Network Star" took an all-American turn this week with the arrival of chef Guy Fieri of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" fame and the staging of a massive Fourth of July spread. It was a revealing episode in which the remaining 10 competitors’ strengths and weaknesses were all the more amplified. When Fieri (a former Food Network Star himself) coached the contestants, you could tell who really has a shot at winning this thing.

Here’s our rundown:

This week’s challenges: First, Fieri and competitors headed to Mel’s Drive-In in Hollywood, Calif., to tape a mock episode of "Triple D" (as Fieri refers to his Food Network staple). Contestants were given various challenges, from creating the perfect 15-second show intro to interviewing a feisty waitress. From there, it was on to the picnic: Contestants had to make a dish inspired by an American (or quasi-American) classic – a lobster roll, baked beans, cole slaw – and then do a brief cooking demo for the dozens of picnic attendees.
