Most of the characters have received some form of power up during this season. Miroku gained the ability to withstand pain; Sango and Inu Yasha powered up their weapons. Even, Shippo gained a level in the eyes of the Fox Demon tribe. Kagome finally receives her turn this episode by reconnecting with an old and seemingly forgotten innate power.
The group stumbles into another Naraku trap; this one centers on using a powerful priestess to lure Kagome into a no-win scenario. Kagome either allows the priestess to drag them to hell, or she must kill the priestess causing her heart to be polluted enough to be controlled by Naraku. However, Kagome remembers her past, a past that reveals her ability to always know who is behind her. Using this in combination with her sacred bow, she foils Naraku's plan and learns from the priestess that she is close to unlocking her true power.
This rediscovered power is too much of a convenient plot device; according to the flashback, this is an innate power she has no control over. She simply knows who is behind her. It is difficult to believe that she would never once hone this power during their journey; it would be an invaluable tool that could prevent anyone from sneaking up on them.
Despite this ludicrous deus ex machina, the choice Kagome was presented with was interesting. Most of the traps and battles they face require figuring out what the weak point of the demon is. This required finding a third option quickly in the heat of battle. The task suited her character and provided some small measure of mystery to ponder.
