Magic Trip - Review

ON THE ROAD Freewheeling portrait of the Merry Prankster's in Magic Trip

In 1964, Ken Kesey, the 29-year-old author ofOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, gathered a group of friends for a freewheeling cross-country road trip. They painted a school bus psychedelic colors (a first), dropped acid, and shot the whole thing on 16mm. Directors Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood have edited that footage into a record of the fabled Merry Pranksters odyssey. It's like seeing the birth of the '60s, with great moments (including Neal Cassady doing speed-freak monologues). But MAGIC TRIP was also a feast of ''communality'' that now looks like a goofy narcissistic ramble. (Also available on demand) B,,20515351,00.html
