‘America’s Got Talent,’ Week 14, Night 2: TV Recap

Week Two of the semi-finals on "America’s Got Talent" offered not just a variety of different sorts of acts, but acts of varying qualities, which is at least part of why the results show on Wednesday night was so fraught with suspense. Host Nick Cannon wasted no time bringing out the first three acts whose fate was to be decided, and continued to demonstrate palpable sympathy for all of the contestants even as he drew out anticipation for the results by asking the judges who they thought would stay and who would go.

Acrobatic team Gymkana, male pole dancer Steven Retchless, and performance art group The Silhouettes joined Cannon on stage, but none of the judges seems confident about which act would move on to the finals. "I can’t call it," Sharon Osbourne said. The Silhouettes prevailed, as probably they should have given the adulation they earned Tuesday and in their prior performances, but the other two acts already accomplished enough in the competition to guarantee they won’t soon be forgotten by the public.

After a commercial break, David Guetta appeared on stage to perform "Where Them Girls At," a single from his new album. Guest vocalists Flo Rida and Nicki Minaj joined him on stage, which was certainly welcome, but the routine felt odd since Guetta appeared to be performing his electronic backing music live while the vocals were prerecorded. Even Minaj, whose endlessly inventive rhymes (not to mention outfits) never fail to entertain, failed to deliver a compelling performance, although like with the contestants, Cannon made her, Guetta and Flo Rida feel like virtuosos.
