NEW GIRL “Pilot” Review

NEW GIRL "Pilot" Season 1 Episode 1 – It’s hard to judge the pilot of any show especially one which has so obviously been tweaked to within an inch of its life by the network, one which has found every really good joke thrown into a spoiler filled trailer released months ago so that by the time the episodeactually airs and the jokes are put in context, they feel remarkably stale. This is no one’s fault except the marketing team and it’s why I tend to hate promos and try to avoid them like the plague (and yes, I’ve seen most promos for this fall season, so I’m a raging hypocrite).

The adorkable (oh how I hate that portmanteau) Zooey Deschanel is a charismatic, instantly likeable presence. Though I cannot remember what her character’s name is. She might as well be named Zooey, since the it’s the appeal of the actress upon which this show’s charm hinges. Her character, unfortunately, is insanely inconsistent. Sure, she’s filled with broad quirky pop culture references which are deployed with unerring cynicism pretending to be, ahem, "cute". But for someone who is supposed to have no clue in terms of how to dress for a dinner date (overalls? Please) she sure has a nice fashion sense IN EVERY OTHER SCENE (see the cute pink dress in the pic above). Read More...
