‘Desperate Housewives’ Season 8, Episode 2, ‘Kiss Them Goodbye!’: TV Recap

This week’s episode of Desperate Housewives epitomized a daytime soap. It offered up some super shallow story lines, then concluded with one key development that served as an admonishment: Now matter how dull the program, if you want in on this series you gotta stay in.

For too much of the hour, the Gabrielle and Susan sections played on the theme of the continued burden of keeping their secret (the unintentional killing, by Carlos, of Gabby’s stepfather at the end of last season and the four friends’ aid in burying him). Gabby goes so far as to hire a stripper to distract Carlos, but he can’t get his mind off his bad deed.

As for Lynette, the show offers some meaningful moments in the next phase of her marital separation, discipline of the kids. She and Tom find themselves fighting over who’s going to play the nice parent and who’s the mean disciplinarian. It’s real-life stuff and done well, but it’s predictable.
