‘X-Factor,’ Season 1, Episode 6: TV Recap

In comparison to other performance-based shows like "America’s Got Talent" or even its predecessor on Fox, "American Idol," the competition on "The X-Factor" is set up in an unusual format. While all of the contestants are required to audition alone at various stages of the competition, the show’s producers group them together for rehearsals, and occasionally for performances, which at this early point in the season makes it extraordinarily difficult to remember each of them, if you can figure out who they are in the first place. Needless to say that also intensifies the suspense for viewers, who will get their share of mini-narratives via individual stories, but have less of an opportunity to get to know the performers until later in the season.

For the time being, that unfortunately also makes it tough to distinguish one stage of the competition from another. On Wednesday, judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and L.A. Reid watched eight groups of contestants perform; on Thursday they watched three more, before dismissing a full third of them. The only evident difference between Wednesday’s groups and Thursday’s was that the final group seemed to be comprised of people about whose talents the judges were the least certain – or maybe they just should have been. But by the end of the evening’s episode, the number of contestants would be down from 64 to 32, which meant that there were more performances in store for viewers. Read More...
