‘X-Factor,’ Season 1, Episode 9: TV Recap

Tuesday marked the first night of live performances, and host Steve Jones didn’t hesitate to highlight the stakes right off the bat when he said, "it’s all come down to this." Unlike other competition shows, however, the judges sequestered the singers that they’re mentoring, and following a performance from each of them, their designated judge will vote for three of them to go through, and for one to go home.

L.A. Reid mentored the Boys under 30, and the first act he brought out was Astro, a 14-year-old rapper who turned a mashup of Wrecks-N-Effect’s "Rump Shaker" and Kris Kross’ "Jump" into a showcase for his quite frankly extraordinary talent. Afterward, Paula Abdul observed, "this is what you’re going to be doing your whole life." Cowell offered what initially seemed like a backhanded compliment, but he eventually admitted, "you come out on this stage and just killed everybody."

Next up was Chris Rene, who sang a beefed-up version of "Love Don’t Live Here Anymore." The judges seemed equally impressed, although they didn’t hesitate to suggest he still had some room for growth: Abdul called Rene "infectious," and Nicole Scherzinger said, "I don’t know if I would have picked that song for you, but you did your thing." Cowell, on the other hand, said "I don’t think you’re the best singer, but I think you’re one of the best recording artists in this competition – you’re 100 percent authentic." Read More...
