A GIFTED MAN “In Case of Memory Loss” Review

A GIFTED MAN "In Case of Memory Loss" Season 1 Episode 6 - With three cases this week, we’re left with no time for Michael’s personal life. Even so, A Gifted Man delivers an emotional episode that, in my opinion, may be the best so far.

The first case concerned George, Michael’s soccer buddy. Severe respiratory problems combined with regular travel to India lead Michael and Kate to diagnose possible tuberculosis. When the tests come back negative, Michael decides to ask George if he was tested for HIV after a drug problem some years back. Worried, George tells his wife they can’t be together and takes off. But what George’s wife tells Michael and Kate leads them to a very different final diagnosis – George has Addison’s disease caused by complications from lung cancer. They manage to find him and treat him, and Michael is optimistic about his future.

The second case patient was Donnie, a homeless guy who turns out to be a former football star that Michael treated half a decade ago. Once Michael realises who Donnie is, he doesn’t hesitate to take him to Holt Neuro for treatment. It doesn’t take long for him to discover the problem – chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease caused by brain injuries sustained during his football career. Michael attempts treatment, but with no known cure, he’s left with no option than to watch Donnie’s condition grow worse. A doting Rita finds an estranged family member for Donnie to stay with, but soon after they receive news that, unable to cope, Donnie has committed suicide. But as a show of faith in Michael’s talents and ability to find a cure, Donnie has donated his brain for research. Read More...
