‘The X-Factor,’ Season 1, The Semi-Finals: TV Recap

In perfectly exploitative fashion, "X-Factor" began with a recap of judge Nicole Scherzinger’s spectacularly disastrous decision last week to send the competition into deadlock, and inadvertently, to send 13-year-old Rachel Crow home. While the mounting pressure must be enormous on the judges to choose which acts truly deserve to go forward, Scherzinger made a fatal, irresponsible miscalculation in not voting, precisely because it’s supposed to be her expertise which helps shepherd performers with real promise past the ones with, well, if not none, then less of it. Simultaneously, the opening montage reiterated the no doubt well-intentioned but misguided emphasis the show places on the judges rather than the acts themselves, as if what viewers really care about is which of them prevails as opposed to which performer ultimately does.
