Smash “Pilot” Review

I had mixed expectations when I sat down to view NBC’s much promoted pilot episode of Smash. I’m a fan of the musical form and a sucker for behind-the-scenes shows that offer a dramatic peek at a working world that I would otherwise not be privy to, but truth be told, I’m just not a huge Marilyn Monroe fan.

Sure, she’s in some of my favorite films of all time, but for the past few years I’ve felt like I just couldn’t get away from the constant wave of Marilyn quotes and photos and I wasn’t sure how I’d react to a show that might spend a good chunk of its plot retelling the life and times of Marilyn Monroe in musical form.

Although Smash tells the story of "Marilyn the Musical" going from idea to reality, this pilot wasn’t all about Marilyn – at least not the Marilyn that has survived in the form of internet memes and tackyhandbags.
