‘Luck,’ Season 1, Episode 5: TV Recap

 

Finally, we get to see Ace and Gus’s horse, Pint O’ Plain, in a race, and the Irish red is just about as impressive as the show’s other two equine stars, Mon Gateau and Gettin’ Up Morning. But it’s not that simple. Nothing in "Luck" is. It wouldn’t be another race without some major plot implications.

To their surprise, Gus and Ace learn that their prized horse is scheduled to race that week, but with apprentice jockey Leo at the reins. Ace sees the angle the horse’s trainer, Escalante, is trying to play: having a young "bug" like Leon jockey the horse would send the odds up, allowing bettors in the know, especially Escalante, to clean up on winnings when the horse blows away the field. Ace gives the trainer an ultimatum, though. He doesn’t want some inexperienced rider in the saddle, and he gives Escalante 20 minutes to agree to changing the jockey, or he and Gus are taking Pint O’ Plain with them. Escalante folds, and Gus and Ace get their wish. As consolation, Ace throws five grand to Escalante to give to the jockey, which Escalante then gives to the jockey’s agent, Joey. Read More...
