Smash “Understudy” Review

As if to pour salt in Ivy’s wounds after her humiliating experience in last week’s episode of Smash, Karen was asked to be the understudy for Marilyn in tonight’s episode, "Understudy." Initially, I wasn’t sure why Ivy wasn’t the natural choice for understudy since she had already been playing the role, but her conversation with Derek made it clear that her terrible behavior on stage had temporarily blacklisted her from the professional theater world.

I wasn’t sure if Ivy had some cruel sabotage up her sleeve when she started rebuilding bridges with Karen and giving Derek advice to be easier on Karen at rehearsal. If Ivy is to be believed, her grand scheme is to be incredibly nice to everyone so she can earn their forgiveness and get back into the show. If that’s the worst of her plotting, I’m absolutely fine with that. On top of her prescription pill problem, I wouldn’t want to see her turn into some kind of obnoxious maniacal villain.
