Country singer Timothy Poe hit national headlines for his claims of having been injured in active duty made during his "America's Got Talent" (Tue., 9 p.m. ET on NBC). News outlets immediately picked up on the story when it was reported that there were no military records corroborating his tale of injury in Afghanistan in 2009.
While the records do indicate he was in Afghanistant for about a month that year, there's no record of injury, nor did he receive a purple heart. "AGT" responded by saying they don't deal with background checks until they reach the Top 48.
That wasn't going to be an issue, as Poe didn't make it out of Las Vegas. It was his voice that did him in during this round, as opposed to any questions about the veracity of his story. The episode was filmed before the controversy erupted.
But while Poe and several early memorable contestants were eliminated, there were still plenty of favorites moving forward to the next round.
"America's Got Talent" continues on NBC next week at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday and 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
