Fresh Meat (Channel 4) Series 2 Episode 1 Review

Channel 4?s Fresh Meat broke out big time last year, and now the real test will come with the notoriously difficult second series. Nominated for a BAFTA and winning various other awards on the 2011 circuit, there was little doubt it would return, but would it retain it’s particular charm and irreverence along with the unexpected popularity?

Judging by this episode, that’s a yes. The joy of Fresh Meat was always its inherent, sometimes quite grim, realism and, as any university student knows, not a lot changes over the mid-term break. Vod (Zawe Ashton), Howard (Greg McHugh), Josie (Kimberly Nixon), Oregon (Charlotte Ritchie), Kingsley (Joe Thomas) and JP (Jack Whitehall) have all been away over Christmas, but return to Manchester in pretty much the same state as they left in. Things are still awkward between Josie and Kingsley after their almost-courting dance last series, Vod is still flighty and unreliable, and Howard has gotten himself a job at a local meat factory.
