The plan when they announced the DVDs was to cut them up into 20min chunks and air them as episodes comprising a new season.
I'm not sure what the timetable is for that to happen.

like freetv22 said, futurama wasn't going to be renewed but because of the DVD-Sells that alone could finance another season they decided to make 4 movies. After, i think it was the first or second one, Fox announced that they signed those 4 movies to be broadcasted as 3 episodes each in a new Season. But you can already buy it as full movie on DVD.
It's just a cheap trick by fox who just didn't want to finance another season but are quite willing to let it work for their ratings...4 movies are still good though. especially the fourth one which kinda looks like an end so another season after the movies is very unlikely.

ya know, if you rent the movie's and listen to the commentary, they actually cover this. just saying. all i rented was the first one, but the writers actually talk about the vary meeting where the conversation to 'renew' the show was had. funnily enough, apparently they were never officially canceled, (or at least, no one told the writers) they just stopped calling.
