The Hour Series 2 Episodes 5 and 6 Review

If this is the end, which is likely given the low viewing figures on BBC2, then The Hour certainly haven’t taken the easy road. We didn’t want them to, of course, and this two-part finale (aired over two nights in the UK) has emerged as a nigh-on perfect closer for a show that was little-seen but much loved by those who have been lucky enough to discover a hidden gem.

To get two years, of course, isn’t too shabby, and no one can deny the show’s writers have used that time wisely. While I often found the first series frustrating and overly complex, this second go around has surprised and amazed me every week. It’s deeply romantic while remaining ever-so-cynical; it’s staunchly feminist despite its setting in a man’s world; it comments on society while never bogging us down with facts; and it’s stumbled upon something magic with its cast. Dominic West, Ben Whishaw and Romola Garai (not to mention the stellar supporting cast) are wonderful, and deserve to revisit Hector, Freddie and Bel again in a third series. Read More...
