Who’s your daddy? In tonight’s Once Upon a Time (Season 2, Episode 14: “Manhattan”), Mr. Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) gets hammered, Cora (Barbara Hershey) and Regina (Lana Parrilla) take a stab at finding the dagger, and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) greets Neal (Michael Raymond-James) the way everyone greets a long lost love: By tackling him.
What’s in the Box?
Gold, Emma, and Henry (Jared Gilmore)
arrive at Baelfire’s apartment, and Emma realizes Bae isn’t expecting
them. Uh-oh. When she pretends to be a UPS person, Bae bails. Luckily,
Emma goes charging after him and finally manhandles him to the ground
like it’s the Super Bowl and she had to save the game-winning touchdown.
Emma
realizes for the first time that Bae is actually Neal — aka Henry’s dad
— and she’s stunned. They move things to a bar — as they’re known to do
— and Neal says he didn’t find out she was related to Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Charming (Josh Dallas) until August (Eion Bailey)
showed him his wooden box. We finally see inside the box, which
contained a typewriter and a paper that says, “I know you’re Baelfire.”
Wait — after all the speculating we’ve all been doing about what kind of shocking, magical item might be in that box, that was it? A freakin’ piece of paper?! Talk about a letdown.
Meanwhile,
Gold and Henry bond over a couple of NYC’s finest dirty water dogs.
It’s especially cute to see these two connect, with Gold thanking Henry
for bringing Emma to Storybrooke and even calling Henry “remarkable.”
Aww! Then again, knowing what happens at the end of the episode
involving Henry and Gold, this might be the last cute scene we get
between them.
Another Trip to the Library That Doesn’t Involve Reading
Cora convinces Regina and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) to help her find Rumple’s dagger, so Regina pays Belle (Emilie de Ravin) a visit. She puts Belle to sleep and makes everything in her purse fly out in order to find the library book holding the dagger — which Greg (Ethan Embry) records. We hope she puts all that stuff back in the purse the way she found it — Belle seems like the type who values a well-organized purse.
Cora,
Hook, and Regina all head to the library, because who doesn’t love a
nice field trip? The dagger is gone, but they find a map which Hook uses
to locate it. Cora then tosses Hook aside and plans to use the dagger
to make Rumple kill Snow, Charming, and Emma. Come to think of it, a day
in which three people die is probably a light day of killing by Cora’s
standards.
Back in the Big Apple, Gold
breaks into Bae’s apartment (gee thanks, Dad!) but is furious when he
realizes Emma isn’t telling him the full story about Bae. Just before
things get ugly, Bae himself busts into the apartment. Nice timing.
And We Thought Our Family Reunions Were Awkward
Emma
tries to get Henry to leave the room, but Bae eventually learns Henry’s
age and realizes Henry is his son. So Bae tells Henry, “You owe me a lot of Father’s Day presents.” Henry tells Emma that she shouldn’t have lied to him about his father, and so he wants to meet Bae.
Meanwhile,
Gold pleads with Bae to come back to Storybrooke with him, and even
offers to turn him back to a fourteen-year-old, which is a very strange
offer. Bae then tells him he is still haunted by the image of Rumple
abandoning him when they were supposed to leave Fairytale Land together.
Clearly, Bae has some baggage.
Bae
tells Gold to leave, and then Gold sees Bae and Henry getting a little
father-son bonding time on the fire escape. Ouch. Gold clearly is
hatching a plan to do something to Henry, and we don’t think the plan
involves taking his new grandson to Disneyland or anything.
Do You See What I See?
In
the flashback, Rumple and Milah are optimistic that fighting the ogres
will finally prove Rumple is not a coward. So much for that. Prior to
battle, Rumple chats with a seer with eyes in her hands, who says Milah
is with child and Rumple’s actions tomorrow will leave his son
fatherless. But a note to self: Never trust someone with eyes in their
hands.
When Rumple hears he’ll be
riding into battle on a leather saddle known as a “cow,” as the seer
predicted, he freaks. So he grabs the nearest sledgehammer and makes
himself unfit for duty. Milah is holding Baelfire when Rumple limps
home, and she’s ashamed by his actions. Poor Rumple just can’t win.
Later
on, after Bae has left him, Rumple confronts the seer again, this time
about finding his son. She explains about the curse which someone else
will cast and and another person will break. When she doesn’t have more
info than that, she offers him her powers, which he accepts. Uh, did he
accept the powers because he was jealous of what an amazing life the
seer was having?
And just before the
seer keels over, she tells Rumple that a young boy will lead him to Bae,
but the boy will also be his undoing. Gold is unfazed and says he’ll
just have to kill the boy. Which reminds us: Henry might not want to
spend quite so much time hanging out precariously on fire escapes in
Gold’s presence. Just a thought.
Three Biggest Mysteries of the Night:
—
Now that we know Gold is Henry’s grandfather, it’d be nice to have more
cute moments between these two. But instead of, say, Gold taking Henry
for ice cream, it appears Gold is considering taking Henry for trip to
the morgue. Would Gold actually go through with killing Henry? We’d hope
not, but Gold is nothing if not a man of his word.
—
So many death threats happen this week! We’re not only concerned for
Henry’s well-being but also for Emma, Snow, and Charming’s, as Cora
seems determined to find the dagger and get Gold to kill them. We’re
assuming Regina will find a way to stop Cora from doing this, but
stopping Cora is always easier said than done.
—
And of course the biggest mystery is: Who will Emma end up with? After
the adorable chat between Neal and Henry, it’s hard for us not to want
Emma and Neal together. But let’s not forget how much chemistry Emma and
Hook have, too. Okay, fine — who doesn’t like a good old-fashioned love triangle? Or maybe we should include August and make it a love rectangle?
