The Following seems to have been struggling to find its footing over the past several weeks - as many freshmen television series do. There have been a couple of episodes that felt as if the show was beginning to crystallize, only to stumble a bit. This week The Following did feel like it was finding it's stride. It's still too early to predict how this will play out for the remainder of Season 1, but for now, the show has become, at the very least, it's own unique entity. The structure is stronger than the initial not-as-workable play on The Silence of the Lambs, and there is a dynamic quality to the relationships now. Particularly between Joe and his followers. While Carroll and Hardy did not quite capture the Starling and Lecter magic, Carroll and his acolytes bring something new and interesting to this genre. Getting Carroll out and into the world, opening things up for Purefoy to expand beyond the confines of that table and putting the spotlight on the cult and its culture was the right move.
