Defiance Season 1 Review “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go”

After a reasonably entertaining pilot, the first proper episode of “Defiance,” somewhat laboriously-titled “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go,” was a solid if unspectacular effort that lacked the wow factor of the preceding episode, but it was a decent story, well told. It mostly revolved around the repercussions of the battle in the pilot, as Mayor Amanda prepared to bury the forty-one townspeople that died. Meanwhile, her former assistant, Ben, who previously helped the bad guys- including the former Mayor Nicky- was revived by her henchman Birch and set about detonating a bomb in the mines underneath the town, in hopes of unleashing radiation on everyone. That’s some “Plan B.” I’m still not seeing how all of this is “for their own good,” as the former Mayor put it last episode, but she wasn’t sticking around to find out, as she made her way amongst her old friends to say her goodbyes before splitting town.
