Mariska Hargitay to Leave Law & Order Special Victims Unit

Actress Mariska Hargitay has hinted she may be leaving "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" after nearly ten years to spend more time with her child. Hargitay, who started playing Detective Olivia Benson in the long-running TV drama in 1999, admits she's missing out on family time and is thinking about leaving the show.Read More

What! If she leaves, then it's the absolute end of SVU. The show cannot go on without Benson and Stabler.

Nonsense, wombatzo. Hargitay has been acting badly up for several episodes now, and Benson is quite an annoying character these days. It would do good for the show to replace her with someone fresh. Or, just call off the show altogether - Ice-T and the new ADA also suck, Chester Lake was taken off, and Munch doesn't get enough air-time. Either revamp the show or cancel it - it is dying and it ain't pretty.

I disagree completely, J45. Mariska Hargitay has been given some very difficult scripting for the past couple episodes, and while I think there has been some illogical choices from the writers, Hargitay has stayed true to her character throughout. For instance, I don't think it'd be in character for Olivia to admit being assaulted to that Marine, and they haven't directly specified whether or not Elliot knows exactly what happened in "Undercover". But Hargitay has little control over that, and her acting has been superb. She will be sorely missed if she does decide to leave the show. I only hope that the casting people replace her with someone better than Dani Beck-- if they don't, it's pretty much guaranteed that the show is going to go belly up. There's too many hardcore Olivia/Elliot shippers and Dani-haters out there :)

Good points, selene0789. Maybe it's not Hargitay's fault but the writers'. Either way, Benson is just not a good character anymore. They should either improve the writing, replace Hargitay (not with Beck!), or just end the show. It's had a good run.

It would probably end up getting cancelled if she left. And even if it didn't it would start to majorly suck. But its not as good as it was anyway, I miss Novak, and Munch should have as much screen time as he once did.

If mariska leaves the show, then its all over...she makes the show...her character is great. I watch the show every tuesday and i have seen every episode since 1999....i love all the characters and i was already pissed when casey novak left...olivia cannot leave...CANNOT LEAVE!!!

It's been a long run - I can understand the actors feeling like it's time to move on. And Mariska is leaving (if she is in fact quitting the show) for a very good reason. It's not as if she's leaving solely for bigger opportunities or roles or because she needs to go to rehab for drugs. She wants to spend more time with her son. I can't say that I wouldn't want to do the same.
The scripting this season has been lacking, in my opinion. I love the show, but I find myself liking it less these days. I think it's all the drama with Elliots family and, eh, its just not striking a high note.

I think the show will be as great as always without M.H. It's just like Law & Order; they have replaced characters the past 17 years or so, and it just keeps going. The truth is new characters refresh the stories and... I don´t think Dani Beck was so bad. The strength of the show is its concept combined with the characters and that can continue to be as good as always if the cast member to replace Mariska is carefully chosen.
