It's pretty well accepted now that the overnight TV ratings that arrive each morning aren't a complete picture of how many people watch a given show. For a number of reasons, though -- some having to do with habit and the news cycle, some having to do with the real business of television -- those numbers tend to be the ones we talk about most.And when we're talking about them, they can be pretty depressing. Ratings for broadcast networks are on a years-long slide, as overnight viewing has gone from the only game in town to just one item on a menu and the amount of original programming elsewhere has mushroomed.
