Black Sails Series Premiere Review “I.”

Starz is in a weird place. The premium cable channel has watched its brethren HBO and Showtime emerge as bastions of high-quality television. Meanwhile, Starz continues to flounder as it searches for its idea of prestige drama. Even its cousin in hypersexual programming, Cinemax, is having greater success producing new series. The channel’s biggest success, Spartacus, was only good for four seasons of slow-motion sexual and blood-spilling excess. The rest of Starz original programming have ranged from the thoughtless (Boss) to the meaningless (Magic City). All of them have some similar versions of the Starz aesthetic, but all of them have failed for one reason or the other.
