Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC): Would You Want to Work for S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Aside from the annoying acronym S.H.I.E.L.D. is a sketchy organization. Their job is to defend and protect the world from alien attacks, scientific snafus and a large assortment of other things that can go wrong when you’re dealing with otherworldly objects, superpowers and the like. Essentially the organization is presented as a goverment bureaucracy. Like all bureaucracies, there are good people working for S.H.I.E.L.D., but the entity as a whole can be as corrupt as the people they are fighting against.

For example, Centipede is heavily involved human experimentation and control. To what aim, we’re not sure yet, but they use humans as guinea pigs, turning them into mindless soldiers. Then we have S.H.I.E.L.D. which is heavily involved in human experimentation and control. The only difference is they’re not upfront about it. They played God with Coulson’s life; putting him through horrific, exploratory surgeries while he was conscience to bring him back from the dead against his will. The truth about Skye was also swept away behind red tape– to protect her or to better utilize her in the future? Furthermore, agents are regarded as dispensable, as we saw in “The Hub.” Add in the subterfuge used to rally The Avengers on the big screen (plus what’s coming up in the next Captain America movie) and you have the makings of an organization that is as morally and ethically as bankrupt as the people they chase. Would you want to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. knowing all that we know?
