It was a sad time at Greendale this week, as we had to say goodbye to Troy, as Donald Glover left the series. This was a big event for the show and unlike Pierce's departure -- which notoriously had to be inserted in at the last minute last season -- Dan Harmon and the writers were able to properly deal with what it would be like removing a key component of the Community cast.

Though it was almost certainly by design, there was a bit of an unavoidable "Haven't we seen this before?" feeling to the main "Hot Lava" conceit of the episode. Seeing everyone at Greendale completely buy into a silly game is pretty familiar at this point, and that's what Abed wanted - to create a comforting situation that he could wrap himself in, rather than face the fact that his best friend was leaving.
