Supernatural: The Complete Fourth Season Available on Blu-ray and DVD 9.1.09

Starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, Misha Collins, Genevieve Cortese

The third season of Supernatural ended with Dean Winchester sent to Hell, leaving his brother Sam behind. The fourth season begins with Dean's mysterious return, as the war against the demons escalates and an unexpected new factor comes into play.

The fourth season saw the introduction of angels into the Supernatural mythos, most notably in the form of Castiel (Misha Collins). Having raised Dean out of the pit, Castiel serves as both messenger and guide to the spiritually embattled hunter. Meanwhile, Sam continues to struggle with his unusual abilities, granted by his exposure to demon blood, and his unusual relationship with demoness Ruby (played in the fourth season by Genevieve Cortese). Between Dean's conflicted interactions with Castiel and Sam's slow but steady descent into the darkness within his own soul, even fellow hunter and mentor Bobby Singer (returning Jim Beaver) questions if the Winchesters are following the right path.

The main season arc involves a plot by Sam's demonic nemesis, Lilith, to release Lucifer from his imprisonment. Lilith must open 66 "seals", a set of 600 special conditions and events, for Lucifer to be released. As always on Supernatural, this conflict appears straightforward, particularly with the angels coming into the fight, but the devil is in the details. Both Dean and Sam are a part of Lilith's grand plan, and never quite in the way that one would expect.

The heart and soul of Supernatural remains the same: the complex relationship between the Brothers Winchester. This season slowly but surely pits brother against brother, and their sacrificial choices in earlier seasons only serve to make their emerging and widening rift all the more difficult to bear. At the same time, it is the most rewarding aspect of the season. Because the writers have taken such care to make Sam and Dean deep and engaging characters, their conflict feels genuine and earned.

Many fans agree that the fourth season of Supernatural was one of the best. In fact, Supernatural not only succeeded creatively in its fourth season, but managed to grow in the Nielsen ratings during a difficult 2008-2009 television season. Now is the perfect time to discover why so many people have become so devoted to Supernatural!

Supernatural Season 4 is available on Blu-ray and DVD 9.1.09.
