ABC Family's new superhero series, The Middleman, begins Monday, June 16th!
If you're a fan of The Middleman's creator, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, you will definitely love his Middleman series come to life in this show, especially if you're a fan of this particular comic book series.
But, if you're not familiar with Javier's comic book work, I highly recommend checking it out before watching The Middleman, as not being familiar myself when I previewed the pilot of the show, I wasn't a big fan. (You can check him out through his blog here: radio free javi.)
I really enjoyed the quirkiness and the interesting twists on the modern day hero, especially the modern day female art student as a hero. But not knowing the series, I found the villains a little too cheesy since the pilot features mechanical gorillas as the bad guys who hand out in tacky (ABC Family approved) strip clubs.
After getting the chance to take part in a Q&A with Javier Grillo-Marxuach, I caught on to why all this is cool, fun, and comic-booky instead of as cheesy as I felt about it while watching, but it still does come across as a little bit much maybe even if you do know the background.
The story also came off a bit slow so far, as many introductory episodes can, so while there were crazy moments like an evil people-parts monster attacking, and Wendy doing some crazy Middleman training, plus of course the tracking down of the "real" super-smart gorilla bad guy, it just didn't seem as fast-paced as I'd hope for in a fun summer show.
So, overall, The Middleman is very promising, and very worth the watch if you're already a Middleman and Javier fan, but if you're not, give it a chance or check out the comic book first and see what you think!
Catch The Middleman on ABC Family premiering Monday, June 16th at 8/7c!
