What a great episode of Ugly Betty! My favorite part of Ugly Betty is the balance between drama, humor, and Betty's optimism that always makes things worse and better, sometimes in different orders - and this was wonderfully played out in "Crimes of Fashion!"
One of my worries for this season was that Daniel working at Player magazine and dragging Betty down with him would have to get played out a bit, but now just in the 3rd episode, we got Daniel and Betty back at MODE, and the MODE-level drama back as well! Sooo deliciously scandalous!!
Last week, we were left hanging after Wilhelmina's launch party when we saw poor pregnant Christina pushed down the stairs. This week was all about discovering who was behind this crime, with the ridiculousness of Wilhelmina making Christina's misfortune all about her (and her unborn child).
But it did make a bit of sense for Wilhelmina to make it all about her and her unborn child considering the amount of enemies Wilhelmina has vs. Christina.
After Daniel's arrest for the crime - by the sexy cop played by the wonderful Mark Consuelos - because Daniel's specialty shoe prints were discovered at the crime scene, Betty was set on proving Daniel was innocent and along the way, there were some hilarious flashes of how each person imagined the part of the scene he/she had witnessed going down - plus some real life hilarious Marc and Amanda moments as we discovered Marc keeps in practice of yelling at the Wilhelmina mannequin!
But then, oh the drama when bitch and bitcher (aka Marc and Amanda) decided reenacting the crime by using the Wilhelmina mannequin would be a good idea - leading to them wanting something heavier, Betty, then them all tumbling down the stairs!
It was sad to see Betty in the midst of all that discover the details leading to Daniel's guilt like the shoe print, then his raincoat being covered in the same dust Betty was covered in after her tumble down the stairs, plus security tape in Daniel's briefcase! But then Betty got her due relief (and disgust especially watching with her dad) that Daniel was merely covering up his latest affair with the woman helping him out with his Daniel Jr. custody case.
Oh, the secret little dramas of everyone at MODE! But the biggest secret of all? Who really did it, of course! Betty finally got her "ah ha!" clue when Daniel mentioned Alexis had borrowed his raincoat, leading to Betty confronting Alexis who was surprisingly honest and heartbroken over the whole thing for someone who's so often been conniving and nasty.
So all was well (kind of) as Alexis turned herself in for the "crime of fashion," which she truly did feel bad about as she was only imagining all the wrong Wilhelmina had done to her family, and not meaning at all to hurt Christina. (But maybe the baby.)
It's been rumored that Rebecca Romijn (Alexis) is leaving the show, so is this the end of the line for Alexis? Will she go off to jail and never be seen again? I don't see how this crime could really lead to something like life in jail, but maybe it'll lead to long enough that there'd be good reason to not have her on the show.
I have to wonder though, since Alexis mentioned her trouble with facial hair growing after forgetting her estrogen pill just what will happen if she's stuck in jail... hmm. Perhaps that's exactly why we won't be seeing her... or maybe we WILL see her again but back to her male form?? Intriguing!
As for Betty, I was glad to see once again that she learned people aren't always as nice as they seem, but that faith is a good thing to have in those you love and trust. Hopefully that will pull her through next week's episode as Gio returns! Can't wait for that drama!
