Gossip Girl---Why is it so popular?

Why is Gossip Girl so popular? They have steamy scenes, deadly scandals, and everything that anyone could ever dream of having in an entertaining show. But what about Desperate Houswives, or Dirty Sexy Money? Or all of those other soaps? They may have different settings and characters, but there are the same themes in each. Money, sex, drugs and alcohol, etc. All of those soap operas out there are the same. Maybe Gossip Girl is so well-liked because of the young and fresh faces we see on the TV screen. And the youth may like to relate to that. They want to get away from their own boring lives and get an insight on others that have more edge, and well, gossip.

How is Gossip Girl going to change in the next few seasons? New characters maybe, but I predict the plot will be dead and old soon.

I watch it because my life is so full of drama and stuff akin to the things that happen on Gossip Girl, that I like to watch someone else's pretend drama that I'm not involved in and will never be affected by. If that makes any sense.

Gossip Girl is unique in several respects, the first of which relates to the age of the target audience. The story by focusing on teens taps into a market that has been vacant for the past couple of years. With the maturing of shows like Gilmore Girls, One Tree Hill and Degrassi, this market has been left open for new comers. Secondly the production quality is much greater then a traditional soap. And finally the story line is tailored for a younger audience and divergent from more adult soaps. The themes although similar to other soaps are fresh to this new younger audience, but like all soaps will run out of material eventually.
The assertion that fans must be "young and stupid" seems a bit brash, just because it isn't targeted at you does not mean it is stupid. Further one might apply the same criticism thrown at GG to any show in any other genre. Most everything has been done before. Also I seem to smell a whiff of sexism somehow what college girls like to watch makes them stupid? Please go somewhere else to disseminate your hate. Their tastes are different not stupid. Please next time when calling names please at least proper verb conjugation, make should be makes and you're missing a comma.

I watch Gossip Girl, and i do admit that if i didn't watch it and someone told me about it, i wouldn't be interested because i don't usually watch superficial shows like this....i only started watching it to see what the big fuss was, and i ended up getting addicted, firstly because i'm a girl and i thought the guys were hot! But it wasn't actually just the hot guys and the story lines that got me addicted, it's just all the characters as a whole. they have some sort of pull. especially Chuck and Blair, their love/hate/love relationship draws me in, although if they were to leave the show i wouldn't watch it any more, because without them the show is actually really boring. the storylines are over dramatised and every build up ends in an anti-climax. but i still for some reason love the show! i know i sound contradictory but i really cant explain why i like it!!!!!...i would never even tell my friends that i watch it because i find it embarrassing!!! im 20 years old and i think it's aimed at a much younger audience than me! but who cares!!! i even have a 30 song playlist of songs featured on the show cuz they have great music!!

Gossip Girl is, undeniably, a guilty pleasure. I myself enjoy shows with a lot more action or a better storyline (like Lost, Prison Break, and Mad Men), but Gossip Girl is something I really can't stay away from. I think we all agree that it's a little too out of this world (a 15 year old dropping out of school, working as an intern, etc) but I think...that's what draws us all in the most. A show that opens up and gives an idea of what our lives could be like if our dreams could come true.Maybe?Anyway, please visit my blog with all my other entries and reviews on this and that.
