Hellcats- 1.1 "A World Full of Strangers" Review

Hellcats- get ready for One Tree Hill meets Glee!

Alyson Michalka, (formerly of Aly and AJ) stars (with Ashley Tisdale), as Marti, in a CW version of a Bring It On (2000).... sort of. The pilot episode sets up how a rebel joins the cheer leading squad to gain a scholarship and stay in college. Her father's dead, her alcoholic mother works full time on campus and Marti's only hope is to get a degree, pass the Bar, and get out of Memphis.

So she tries out and messes up, but redeems herself by going off with freestyle flips, and break-dancing. Shock! she's selected and moves into the "Cheertown" house.

Ashly Tisdale's character, Savannah, is the Hellcats captain and channels Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) as she offers Marti hangers, "do you prefer silk or wood hangers? I stalked up on both just in case." And just like Bring It On, the once rivals are now BFFs.

Keeping with the CW teen-theme, Vanessa, the cheer coach has been informed that if they don't win Nationals they lose funding.... its Glee only in cheer uniforms and without the singing.

I find that if there aren't dance numbers in every episode, the show will suffer. But I can see the drama dripping from the actors: Marti's love interest, Lewis used to belong to Alice, the "flyer" she's replacing, and Alice isn't pleased, so she begins to sabotage the team. Dan, Marti's best friend (outside the squad) is not like the cheerleaders, and he's going to get neglected... see the drama's all set up for a season of unrealistic experiences.

ok the setup of the show might be a little simple i actually enjoyed the pilot. With a lot of catchy songs in it, this could prove to be a keeper. It's gonna be one of those shows that are gonna give you that happy feeling at the end of the episode.
