In a development that's almost as weird as one of its out-there plots, sci-fi drama Fringe is planning to stage a musical episode.
According to Sci-Fi Wire, the musical numbers will spawn from elaborate hallucinations conjured by Walter Bishop (John Noble), the show's resident mad scientist.
Fringe star Jasika Nicole, who plays FBI agent Astrid Farnsworth, told Sci-Fi Wire that the idea for the musical episode started out as a joke.
"None of us ever thought that it was really going to happen," she said. "We were like, 'Oh, yeah, Fringe should be a musical.' Dancing and singing and goofing off and stuff. And then John says, 'So, you know, there's going to be a musical episode,' and I was like, 'Ha, ha, John,' and he was like, 'No, really, have you read the script?'"
Fortunately several members of the cast have musical backgrounds: Nicole has worked in musical theatre, Blair Brown (who plays Nina Sharp) can sing, and Lance Reddick (Agent Broyles) started his entertainment career as a musician.
The episode, titled 'Overture', will premiere in the States in May as part of a Glee-themed week on US broadcaster Fox.
