This week's episode of One Piece waxes nostalgic, as the characters from the initial East Blue arc of One Piece (Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Zoro, and Usopp) get to indulge in a little bit of homesickness and go back to their roots.
It's a sweet episode in general and gives you a lot of perspective on just how far this series has come over the last decade, as these characters get back in touch with their childhoods and motivations. There's lots of warmth and strength in the little vignettes of the Straw Hat Pirate crew reminding themselves why they're striving so hard and just where their dreams lie, and seeing extra little snippets of their past lives is heartwarming, entertaining, and sometimes poignant. There are a surprising number of emotional highs and lows in this episode, connected ably by warm humor and solid writing.
Which, of course, makes it even more of a kick in the teeth when the Amigo Pirates come to take everything away from the peaceful residents of the town.
Next episode, I hope that the Straw Hat Pirates manage to stave off tragedy and save the little pieces of home they've found!
