Cobra: The Animation - Season 1 - Episode 1 - Review: "The Key of Shiva"

The last part of the big 30th anniversary celebration on the Space Adventure Cobra manga by Buichi Terasawa, Cobra: The Animation kicks off 2010 pretty well but it's not entirely for those new to the property. This new twelve episode series essentially launches on the idea that you're familiar with Cobra so there are some elements that may not click well for new fans, but it also manages to work well as a general space opera piece that doesn't involve high school kids in any way. Right there alone this show scores some points against the multitude of shows out there every season.

Cobra: The Animation takes us on the latest adventure of the man's man as Cobra is an adventurer of sorts who works alongside his trusted partner, an armaroid woman named Lady who has only a small presence in this episode. Cobra's taking some down time on Venus as the show opens though he's looking for a little excitement on this Christmas day to spice things up. As is so often the case for a man like Cobra, the fates oblige and he finds himself in a massive car accident inside a tunnel that's the result of a car chase between members of the Pirate Guild and a woman named Secret. A woman who also happens to be a dead ringer for Dominique, Cobra's "old lady" from the previous installments of the franchise.
