"Saving Grace" is not just another cop show. Its leading character, Grace Hanadarko (Holly Hunter), is an intense Oklahoma City police detective with an audacious life -- and with a guardian angel named Earl (Leon Rippy), who is trying to save her soul.
Grace was raised Catholic. Her brother Johnny (Tom Irwin) is a priest, and her best friend and an OKPD criminalist, Rhetta Rodriguez (Laura San Giacomo), has strong religious beliefs, but Grace, who was sexually abused by a priest as a young girl, has walked away from that part of her life.
So the question arises, why does Grace, who drinks too much and has indiscriminate sexual encounters, have an angel?
"We talk about it as the series goes along, how many people have angels in the world?" Holly tells ET. "That [number] is actually named. Earl tells Grace how many people have had angels in the world. Why Grace has an angel is a question that I want to explore. That may remain a question until the very last episode. But I think that is right and, I think, there is truly something mysterious about -- in fiction -- why this character has this guardian angel."
"Saving Grace" airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. on TNT.
