Recap: "The Age of Dissonance"

This week the 12th graders at Constance and St. Jude's participated in their mandatory senior play, the New York high-society set The Age of Innocence. And in the process of getting into character, many of them discovered their true selves.

It feels like ages since we were last treated to a new episode! But we did leave off at a good place, with Dan and Ms. Carr just starting their illicit affair. Since then they've apparently tried to play by the rules and keep their distance, but their passion was too deep and they could no longer help themselves. By means of old-fashioned pen and paper, they planned a rendezvous. However, clumsy wardrobe mistress Jenny dropped the note and Rufus picked it up. He tried to immediately take control of things and showed up at Rachel's place when she was expecting Dan. He said very little, as his mere presence was intimidating enough to her.

He wasn't quite so intimidating to his own son, who copped a hell of an attitude when confronted. Dan pulled the "I'm 18 now, I can do what I want" line. Rufus could have resorted to the old "While you live in my house..." standby, but he didn't. He made a good point about how Dan could get expelled and could lose Yale if word of this relationship got out, but Dan was hearing none of that.

If Dan wanted to know how difficult it was to lose Yale, he could have talked to Blair. Nelly Yuki was in, which meant Blair was out - apparently, someone anonymously called Yale and told them about her teacher-hazing incident, and just like that, Blair's dreams were crushed. Suddenly, she no longer had a problem identifying with her character, Countess Olenska, someone who can't have what she wanted. Of course, when someone does Blair wrong, she has only one thing on her mind: vengeance.

Blair set her sights on her target: Nelly Yuki in a fat suit. Just as she was about to strike, Blair took another bullet: Someone posted on Gossip Girl the secret info about her ex, Marcus, sleeping with his stepmother and Blair knowing about it. Nelly was also surprised by this news, proving to Blair it wasn't Nelly... so it must have been Vanessa!

Blair, now on a rampage, went after V. Only Serena took up for her "friend" Vanessa, which did not please Blair. And then a message went out on Gossip Girl that Serena only got accepted to Yale because she could guarantee them press releases. And this did not please Serena, who assumed Blair was behind this posting. Blair of course wasn't, so it must be...Dan! This was getting confusing. As Blair lamented to Dorota, "Do you know how hard it is to get revenge when your enemy's changing every five minutes?!" (And how funny was it that Penelope's maid costume looked just like Dorota's uniform?!)
