Community: "Communication Studies" Review Episode 16

You'd think last week's title, "Romantic Expressionism" would've been more apt for this week's episode about Valentine's Day, but because there was a whole lot of communicating going on, I guess it works just as well. There was plenty to love about this episode, including some great interaction between Jeff and Britta, some spot-on pop culture quips from Abed and some hilarious character work from Troy, Pierce and Senor Chang.

For the past few weeks, Community has told some great stories and packed in a ton of jokes, but due to its rocky start, part of me wondered when the other shoe would drop. I think it's safe to say after four strong episodes in a row, they've worked out the kinks and have reached the point where they're no longer trying to find their way. The Jeff/Britta dynamic is really working as evidenced in this episode, where they seamlessly switched from trading insults like bickering siblings to showing genuine affection like two adults. Plus, any time the script calls for Pierce and Troy to sport "elegant ladies' pantsuits" as penance for trying to trick the diabolical Senor Chang, you know it's going to be worth it. Sure, men wearing ladies clothing is an overused comedy bit, but the visual of Troy shamefully cringing on the dance floor, coupled with Senor Chang's own dance moves (think Corey Feldman channeling Michael Jackson), made the whole scene work.
