While not as tightly constructed as last week, this was still one of the more fun 24 episodes this season - before a big twist ending that is one of the most ludicrous ones this show has offered, but at least may lead to better use of one of the show's stars as the season progresses.
It's funny how the whole "real time" construct doesn't really hold up under close examination. This episode began with Hastings and Chloe talking in the wake of the EMP going off, and a quick line - "Kayla is finished in medical" -- had me highly amused. Wouldn't the events we're seeing be mere moments after the last episode? And in that time, they were able to bring Kayla to their medical section and examine her, even as the entire place is scrambling and in chaos? Eh, why not, I guess!
Only a week after the tragic tale of Sgt. Amos, 24 introduced yet another narrow-minded a-hole to the mix, in the form of an NSA higher-up who comes to help CTU, but treats everyone in the office in a condescending manner, refusing to let them help. While this guy was pretty frustrating, it did give us some good Chloe takes charge moments, and hey, it's always fun to see Chloe wield a gun, in the rare moments that occurs - even though I can't believe Hastings wouldn't be forced to lock her up afterwards, as she forced the NSA guys out at gunpoint. But she's Chloe, so she kicks ass and got CTU's systems up and running, in a nicely triumphant moment for the character. Plus, Chloe is one of the few characters whose dialogue is actually intentionally meant to be funny, and I really enjoyed some of her lines here, including her deadpan delivery of, "You're probably an okay guy when you're not at work," to the aforementioned a-hole.
