His career skyrocketing, Zac Efron is proving to many of his fans that he is in control of his own life. The High School Musical star has been steering clear of the genre that made him earn fame, and is heading straight for more challenging material. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zac has signed on to film an upcoming thriller.
While the flick is still untitled, few details about it have been released. It's under Mandate Pictures and will be written by Leslie Dixon. If the name sounds familiar, it's because she has worked with Efron before. In 2007, she wrote the screenplay for the hit musical Hairspray. She's also the one behind Freaky Friday and The Thomas Crown Affair.
The unnamed horror project probably doesn't have its share of 60s dance moves or gigantic feminine tresses, but it's got Zac Efron hooked. With barely any information about the plot of the story, the only hint we've got is that it's going to be a "sexy thriller."
In addition to getting more mature roles, Zac Efron has also been slated to be the executive producer of the upcoming movie, along with Mandate's Nathan Kahane. There's no word yet on the director of the film, but producers are said to be Greg Shapiro of Kingsgate Films, Jason Barrett, and Dixon herself.
From being a teen sensation on High School Musical, Zac Efron is truly taking steps towards being an established actor. He can't deny that the Disney movie catapulted him to stardom, but he's making his own choices regarding his career.
The 21-year-old actor was recently making headlines for his success with the movie 17 Again. He followed this up with commendable reviews for the Richard Linklater-directed Me and Orson Welles. Deciding on his own path, he turned down the role in Footloose to film 2010's The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud.
Now that he's working on a thriller, who knows what this star will be up to next? Just as long as he stays away from the kinds of films his girlfriend is busy with, Efron might just be Hollywood's next sensational leading man.
