We've given you a heaping helping of overheard quotes from Sundance, but we'd remiss if we didn't mention the one we hear constantly about every single film here.
We've heard it at various times about An Education, Paper Heart, Humpday...hell, even Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire. Get into a conversation about the movies that people are liking, and inevitably, someone will say it:
"Searchlight would probably do well with that film."
Yes, Fox Searchlight is our new god now. The studio is just about the only indie-focused outfit to have weathered the cinematic storm as of late (thanks to feel-good hits like Juno, Little Miss Sunshine, and Slumdog Millionaire), and everybody is hoping Searchlight will throw them a life preserver.
Ironically, the one film that no one had pegged as a Searchlight film - Adam - is the one they actually bought. Looks like everyone else is gonna have to settle for Senator and Magnolia!
