"Sacrifice" brings together many story arcs that have been building over the course of the season. Zod's thirst for power and freedom for his people has driven him to the breaking point as he watches those who would hunt his kind creep out of the shadows. Checkmate, while relatively ineffectual so far, has managed to ruffle a few feathers in the meta-human community. Meanwhile, Clark is caught in the middle with hopes that everyone will eventually just get along. After the events of this week, it doesn't look like that is going to happen.
Tess and Chloe seem to get thrown together a lot these days. There's been a lot of added tension between the two due to their respective relationships with Ollie, which has spiced things up a bit. Tess is obviously bothered that Ollie would sleep with a "Plain Jane" like Chloe and she genuinely seems hurt. Besides that, it appears that there is always a bit of a struggle to find something for Tess or Chloe to do on a week to week basis that doesn't involve sitting at a computer screen, getting captured or flirting with Zod. Throwing the two together and putting them in danger kills two birds with one stone. While the two clearly dislike each other, they've also developed a mutual respect for one another over the course of this episode.
The Tess "death" scene was a little contrived. Although, I have to say I'm a little surprised that Tess was left dead for what seemed to be a good couple of minutes before Chloe got around to reviving her. Tess has been rather useless to the plot recently, but I'd rather see her go out in grander fashion than what we saw this week. Now that Chloe has saved Tess, I'm hoping this gives Tess' character a little more focus. I'm still not too sure what her actual agenda is.
