Avatar is the biggest movie ever.
James Cameron's unstoppable sci-fi epic has surpassed Titanic to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Avatar entered Monday $2 million shy of Titanic's global benchmark of $1.843 billion and passed the tally by mid-day, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Final numbers are expected later Tuesday.
Avatar's milestone was helped by foreign receipts, which totaled $1.292 billion over the weekend, making the film the biggest international release of all time - another title it inherited from Cameron's Titanic. The saga, just six weeks into its release, also eclipsed The Dark Knight as the second biggest domestic grosser over the weekend with $552 million and has Titanic's $600.8 million stateside record well within its sights.
Avatar five-peats, passes $500 million domestically
Numbers are not adjusted for inflation. On an inflation-adjusted list, Gone with the Wind is the box-office king of the world with $6 billion. It grossed $400 million worldwide in 1939.
