Boardwalk Empire: ''The Ivory Tower'' Review Episode 2

The feds have a sit down with Nucky as the gangster cleans house and makes a new, permanent enemy. Not bad for the second episode in HBO's very promising series.

Boardwalk Empire's "The Ivory Tower" trades Scorsese's wink-wink camera tricks (iris wipes and freeze frames) for director Tim Van Patten's more subtle and effective visual cues in an episode that is in some ways better than the pilot. Nucky takes center stage as a man who doesn't have to move people as chess pieces; they just move out of his way on their own. In doing so, the story is less concerned about showcasing the series' expensive production values and more focused on the consequences of doing business in Nucky's Atlantic City.
