Treme: "All On a Mardi Gras Day" Review Episode 8


Treme is back, following a break for Memorial Day weekend. Allow me to catch you up while the insanely catchy theme song begins running on endless loop inside your brain once again. Albert was beaten (though not grievously harmed) and arrested for refusing to vacate his friend's apartment in the Cooper projects, Janette closed up shop and took her restaurant on the road, Annie went back to Sonny even after he got high and slapped her, and LaDonna learned the unfortunate fate of her brother, Daymo. Down in the Treme, just me and my baby…


I think a lot of us were looking forward to the inevitable Mardi Gras episode, expecting that David Simon would hold off until the season finale then wrap up any number of storylines against the backdrop of the carnival. Instead, Mardi Gras came and went rather gently. It's been a hallmark of Treme so far: we wait expectantly for the big event, react with confusion when nothing traditionally dramatic occurs, then realize in hindsight that the subtle interactions between the characters were what we were meant to be focusing on all along. In other words, this was the quintessential episode of Treme.
