"My Bloody Valentine" starts out like your typical CW show with a young, attractive couple having a sweet moment at the end of a first date. But things veer quickly enough into Supernatural territory when the moment of love is twisted into insatiable hunger for each other, culminating in them literally eating each other to death. The end result may seem like a characteristic Supernatural gross-out scene, but its romantic fake-out beginning and the timing of the episode with Valentine's Day just a few days away gives it the extra kick it needs to be especially funny. Supernatural may not make it a point to commemorate every holiday, but I like their style with this one.
Ben Edlund has written some of the most memorable Supernatural moments and any time I see his name in the opening credits as the writer, I know there is a solid chance of some hilarious and bizarre things ahead. "My Bloody Valentine" is no exception. The gems in this episode run the gamut from the subtly amusing scene when Castiel materializes inches away from Dean's face before Dean has a chance to finish telling him where to appear, to the broadly comic "handshake" of a naked Cupid who gives all three of the guys prolonged hugs. That particular scene is the gift that keeps on giving as Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins all have varying expressions of disgust throughout.
