Community Episode 22: "The Art of Discourse" Review

I'm not exactly sure when Community turned into the "Abed and Friends Parody Half-Hour" but I can't say I'm not amused by all the spot-on pop culture references they cram into this show every week. The main story had Jeff and Britta squaring off against a group of annoying high schoolers who made fun of them for attending Greendale, but the meat of the episode came from Abed completing his list of movie-inspired things that constitute a successful first year of college. With Troy's help, he went through a parade of familiar gags, each one hackier than that last, culminating in a food fight that proved once again, Community knows how to balance ironic self-awareness with complete goofiness to get amazing results.

We've known Jeff as the razor-tongued attorney who's never at a loss for a snarky quip or sarcastic remark when it comes to his fellow Greendale classmates. But this week, he was stumped by three high school kids who insulted him and the group because they were old and still in college. His normal retorts bounced right off the teen idiots because they utilized mimicry and the bulletproof "Duh" defense. Jeff's only recourse was to take the low road - first by trying to sleep with the mom of one of the kids (which failed), and next by doing some mimicking and "duh-ing" of his own. The penultimate scene was a slow-motion gibberish battle that wouldn't have worked in most cases, but was taken to such an extreme that you couldn't help but marvel at the sheer juvenile stupidity of the whole idea. It was fantastic.
