The Gossip Girl pilot is something I've always greatly enjoyed. The TV show plunges you right into the messed up and complicated lives of our main characters - the teenagers of New York, and mostly the Upper East Side. Immediately, you get to see the kind of lives they are living - glamorous, expensive, but also superficial and hateful ones. The style and conversation that is there to support this is well chosen and hilarious.
The pilot follows onto a brief introduction to the characters, and also hints at their relationships in the past, before Serena returned to New York. I really enjoyed this as it leaves a lot of misterious facts floating in the air, and makes you interested in the show. It makes you understand that behind all of the money and pretence of nobility they are just as screwed up as you.
The episode also contrasts very nicely between the richer side of our main characters and the poorer side, showing how their financial issue becomes a 'clash of the titans' at school.
Sometimes when you watch pilots, things happen very slowly to make sure they don't reveal too much straight away. Gossip Girl took the confidence of believing that they CAN reveal a lot, and that people would still be interested. They were right - the episode takes a nice, fast pace, and dives in head first. The pilot probably has the most happen in it than any other show.
Overall, a great episidode bringing people into the world of Upper-Eeast Side teenagers.
